Arapaho Princess Treasure

Long ago, somewhere in the stone cliffs above the Purgatory River, about 5 miles east of Las Animas, Spaniards buried eight burro-loads of 50 lb gold bars. This treasure is known as the Arapaho Princess Treasure. According to legend, the gold bars were buried approximately 300 feet from an odd group of boulders, one of which was shaped like a doll and was about 30 feet tall. The burial site was close to a foothill village from the early 1800s. The Spanish were killed, and the treasure was never found.
